Discussions About Forest Adaptation to Climate Change in Latvia
In early July, the Forest Advisory Board meeting, chaired by the Minister of Agriculture Mr.J.Dūklavs has been held. The aim of the meeting was to involve forest sector stakeholders including the sector executives together with experts from the Latvian University and the Latvia Forestry Research Institute „Silava" for discussions of the European Commission document Green Paper „Forest protection and forest information in the EU - preparing forests to forest to climate change”, and discuss issues related to possible forest adaptation to climate change and the related forest management, taking into account the expressed climate change development scenarios.
Discussions on forest management in the context of climate change in Latvia are actively ongoing. This year we provided seminars for forest sector experts, decision makers, forest owners and educators. The seminars aim to inform about progress of the project "FUTUREforest", results of research related to climate change impacts on forest management and by discussions acquire new knowledge about climate change development and effects in Latvia as well as about opportunities to promote forest adaptation in order to reduce negative effects of changing climate, as well as provide information on climate change policy related international obligations and opportunities for Latvia.
In February, has been organized a seminar for school teachers. More than 100 teachers participated in this event. The seminar discussed the projected climate changes in Latvian, biodiversity protection issues, forest role in climate change, climate change caused risks to forestry, mitigation of climate change negative effects, and other topical climate related issues. The seminar also provided information on the competition "My little hike."
In April, we brought together forest owners to talk about forest management perspectives. Participants were introduced with the results of study on climate change impacts on forest management and practical recommendations for forest management. Forest owners also shared experience concerning operation of cooperatives, forest owners associations and societies both in Europe and Latvia, and discussed forest owners' possible further cooperation development Latvia.
In May, State Forest Service employees were familiarized with the results of research related to climate change impacts on forest management. The workshop "Forest Management in the Context of Climate Change" involving State Forest Service employees discussed possibilities to reduce negative effects of climate change, and climate change related national obligations. The workshop participants also visited Rembate parish where they were showed forest plantings in order to support discussion on the types of forest restoration and choice of reproductive materials to ensure better adaptation to the changed climate.
In July, seminar "Forest Management in the Context of Climate Change" took place involving in discussion State Forest Service Consultancy services centre staff. The seminar aimed to inform about the progress of the Project "FUTUREforest", to improve knowledge on climate change possible development scenarios in Latvia, to discuss opportunities to promote forest adaptation in order to reduce negative effects of changing climate, to share views how to improve forest management. Participants were also informed about climate change policy related international obligations and mitigation potential in Latvia.
In Latvia to the Project "FUTUREforest” is established Advisory Council. The Council members provide recommendations for the successful development of the Project.
For this year we plan some more workshops initiating discussions with different forest sector interest groups, professionals, schoolchildren, students, and government representatives.
