Wales Study Visit
Flooding, and the way in which trees and woodlands play a part in reducing the risks came under the spotlight during the study visit to Abergavenny in south Wales in March 2009.
The FUTUREforest regional specialists were shown some of the latest research on upland woody dams which are being trialled to see their affects on water flow. Initial research has shown that this soft engineering can have real benefits further downstream and may help to support, and reduce the need for, expensive hard engineering.
Visitors also saw how riparian woodland management can also be used to reduce flood flows – and also improve water quality.
