Environment Minister urges foresters to learn from the lessons of Europe

Welsh Government Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development John Griffiths is urging foresters to learn from the lessons of Europe as they plan for climate change and the future. Speaking to leaders of the forestry sector in Wales at the Senedd this week, Mr Griffiths was highlighting findings in a new report from FUTUREforest, the Forestry Commission Wales three year INTERREG IVC project supported by the Welsh Government.

Forests key role as Wales faces climate change threats – and opportunities - Climate change briefing at the Senedd – 9 November 2011

Foresters must start planning now if the woodlands of Wales are to survive the predicted effects of more severe weather conditions as climate change begins to take effect. That’s the clear message being put across to the forest sector, policy makers, and politicians at an important climate briefing at the Senedd, Cardiff Bay supported by Welsh Government Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development John Griffiths AM in November.

FUTUREforest Final Conference


EU Parliament – Brussels – 6-7 September

Politicians, political advisors and policy makers from across Europe joined the FUTUREforest team at the launch of the project’s final report at the European Parliament.

Climate change is a key challenge facing the whole of Europe.


Now an INTERREG IVC European project – FUTUREforest – is looking at how trees and woodlands can adapt to the effects of climate change and provide opportunities for mitigation.

The Interregional Cooperation Programme INTERREG IVC, financed by the European Union’s Regional Development Fund, helps Regions of Europe work together to share experience and good practice in the areas of innovation, the knowledge economy, the environment and risk prevention. EUR 302 million is available for project funding but, more than that, a wealth of knowledge and potential solutions are also on hand for regional policy-makers.
